A short video and dramatic picture both claimed to show flames engulfing the historic sign as wildfires ripped through Los Angeles in January 2025.

Social media users have been sharing fake images of the Hollywood sign burning as deadly wildfires raged across Los Angeles, but the famous landmark was not impacted, according to witnesses.

Wildfires threatened to engulf parts of Hollywood on Wednesday as a growing number of blazes raged across Los Angeles, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and claiming at least five lives.

The LAFD lifted the evacuation order for Hollywood Hills West at 07:30 local time (15:30 GMT) on Thursday. The first blaze began on Tuesday in the city's Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, near Malibu, with others subsequently breaking out across the north of the city.

A new wildfire broke out in scrubland in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills, LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley told a press conference on Wednesday, adding to five other blazes raging in Los Angeles county.

Los Angeles firefighters said no homes burned from the Sunset fire, which occurred near Runyon Canyon and sparked a momentary evacuation order for Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills.
