The notice comes just weeks after several hundred Pratt & Whitney machinists, on furlough for the day, rallied outside the aviation manufacturer’s Middletown plant to protest what they called a punitive lockout at a time when the backlog of engine orders is nearly $100 billion.

Pratt & Whitney is an aerospace manufacturer, a subsidiary of RTX Corporation (formerly Raytheon) and a defense contractor that provides aircraft engines to the military. This past September, the company was awarded a $1.3 billion contract to provide updates to their F135 engine core.

East Hartford-based Pratt & Whitney is cutting some jobs, a company spokesperson said Wednesday. The spokesperson said the company will conduct “a small reduction of salaried positions globally” to “reinvest in high-priority programs and better meet the strong demand for aerospace products.
