Brendan Greene, the creator of the online battle royale shooter PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) — who left the game’s development team in 2019 — has unveiled his plans to create a new generation of a gameplay-focused metaverse called “Artemis” — though non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are unlikely to make an appearance.

Brendan Greene, or "PlayerUnknown," kickstarted the battle royale craze with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Now, Greene has an even bigger goal, a metaverse, but not in the usual way.

The PUBG creator is aware that this is no small endeavor, and set a tentative 2040 target to account for the challenges that lie ahead. The term ' metaverse ' has been tainted by Facebook-turned-Meta's mediocre endeavor that cost its parent company $46 billion between 2021 and 2024, according to NASDAQ.
