Barre syndrome outbreak in Pune has crossed the 100 mark with 3 deaths confirmed as of Thursday. The sudden surge in cases has health officials and Pune city authorities concerned as they ramp up surveillance.

Cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) are on the rise, triggering concern among health officials. As of January 29, a total of three GBS-suspected deaths have been reported in West Bengal, with over 120 cases of the rare autoimmune disease detected in Maharashtra.

The total number of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra has risen to 127, with 72 confirmed cases, the state’s Public Health Department announced on Wednesday (29 January), as reported by ANI.

The state health department said in a release that of the total 130 patients tracked and under treatment now and 20 patients are on ventilator support.

According to Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme by the Public Health Department, 130 suspected cases and two suspected deaths of GBS have been found in the State. Among the 130 patients, 20 are on ventilator.

A 41-year-old chartered accountant from Pune has become the first confirmed casualty of the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in the city, with cases rising to 111 in just under three weeks. The Maharashtra health department has involved experts from Delhi and Bengaluru to assess the situation and guide public health measures.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is rare, but most cases follow an infection with a virus or bacteria. GBS affects the nerves that control muscle movement and impacts immune system.
