With New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier out of the lineup, Dawson Mercer will start Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers as the team's second-line center. "To me, (Mercer) was outstanding in the third period the other night in Montreal when we asked him to step into that role," head coach Sheldon Keefe said to NJD.TV.
Dawson Mercer scored two goals in the second period, Dougie Hamilton had a goal and an assist, and Timo Meier had two assists for the Devils (27-17-6), who are 1-2-2 in their past five games. Jacob Markstrom allowed one goal on seven shots before sustaining an undisclosed injury early in the second period.
