The late president is lying in state through Thursday morning, giving the public a chance to pay respect in person.

Jimmy Carter, the late U.S. president who served only one term in office and was widely admired for his humanitarian work after leaving the White House, was remembered during his state funeral on Thursday as a man who put honesty and kindness above partisan politics.

Only three family members spoke during the funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, but many more attended the services and are expected in Plains. Ga.

Family, friends and former political colleagues of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, including current President Joe Biden, spoke on Thursday at his state funeral in Washington. Carter was remembered for his public service,

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and all living former presidents attended the funeral, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Both President-elect Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence also attended, marking the first time the pair were in the same room in four years.

Mr. Carter said his spiritual rebirth was an “evolutionary thing” rather than “a flash of light or a sudden vision of God speaking.”

Here is Thursday’s schedule for the final day of rites honoring Jimmy Carter, the 39th president, who died Dec. 29.

Jeni Stepanek’s son Mattie had forged a bond with Carter in 2001, days before he was supposed to die. Mattie had said one of his last wishes was to meet with the man he considered his hero.

These events will all take place around the weekend as the nation says goodbye to the late president during a national day of mourning.
