Meta has announced some major changes to its content moderation policies, including a shift from third-party fact checkers to X-style Community Notes.

The Community Notes model will allow users on Meta's social media sites Facebook, Instagram and Threads to call out posts that are potentially misleading and need more context, rather than placing the responsibility on independent fact checking organizations and experts.

Facebook owner Meta is ending its third party fact-checking programme and will instead rely on its users to flag misinformation. The social media platform on Tuesday said it would “allow more speech by lifting restrictions on some topics that are part of mainstream discourse and focusing our enforcement on illegal and high-severity violations” and “take a more personalised approach to political content”.

Meta Platforms will end fact-checking across all platforms, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday. The fact-checking program, which began in December 2016, will be replaced on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads by a “Community Notes” feature.
