You don't have to take great pains to preserve your Switch to ensure that you can still play your favorite games on it years and years from now. Nintendo has revealed in its earnings report that the upcoming successor to the Switch will have backwards compatibility and will be able to run games made for the current console.

"At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch," Nintendo posted in a social media update attributed to company president Shintaro Furukawa. "Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well."

While the upcoming console is yet to be officially unveiled by the company, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 (or whatever it's called) will be backwards compatible with the original console. It's great news for fans of the Nintendo Switch, which has amassed quite the library since launching back in 2017.
