Nine beaches in Sydney, including well-known Manly beach, were closed to bathers on Tuesday after small white and grey balls of debris washed up on the shores at the height of the summer holiday season.

The mysterious balls that forced the closure of several beaches in Sydney last week were found to contain saturated acids, E. coli and faecal bacteria, authorities say. Sydney's Northern Beaches council said it has sent the debris to the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for further analysis.

The makeup of the small, ball-shaped debris that recently washed up in Sydney's Northern Beaches has been revealed, and it's just as gross as the first time. More balls washed up on several beaches last Wednesday, including Manly, Dee Why, Long Reef, Queenscliff, Freshwater, North and South Curl Curl, North Steyne and North Narrabeen.

The Northern Beaches Council said that efforts were underway to safely remove the debris. Meanwhile, Local authorities collaborated with the state’s environmental agency to investigate the matter.
