When game director Hugo Martin discussed “Doom: The Dark Ages,” three images spring up over the discourse. The first is Leonidas in the “300” battling the Persians at the Hot Gates in Thermopylae. The second is another Frank Miller project “The Dark Knight Returns” and the last one is a tank.

January isn’t yet over, and already the gaming world is going through a tornado of updates and leaks. Starting from the GTA 6 leaks, almost every now and then,

Doom: The Dark Ages takes a decade of learning and combines it with the grounded, strafe-to-aim movement of the original 1993 video game.

Doom: The Dark Ages was first revealed during the Xbox Games Summer Showcase in 2024. It’s a prequel to 2016’s Doom reboot that reimagines the shooter as a medieval fantasy. We haven’t seen much of it since then, but Id just unleashed a more comprehensive look at the project, detailing its design philosophy, new weapons, and more.

The next DOOM game, The Dark Ages, is due out in only a few months and will come to PS5, Xbox, and PC platforms in addition to Game Pass.

During a Q&A tied in with this evening's Xbox Direct which ws atteneded by Eurogamer, Doom: The Dark Ages' executive producer Marty Stratton said the upcoming release will be a "strictly campaign" affair.

Doom: The Dark Ages, launching summer 2025, explores the origins of Doom Slayer. Changes from Doom Eternal include more grounded combat and the addition of vehicles. Not announced for Nintendo Switch yet; possible release once details on Switch 2 are known.
